Tablet PC’s - Has the next generation laptop slipped in the back door?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I’ve been a user of Tablet PC’s for about 5 years now. Yes, I had one of the really bad version 1.0 Tablets.

For those of you who don’t know what a Tablet PC is, essentially it’s a laptop that you can write on with a pen. Some of the bonuses that come with using a Tablet PC include:

  • Digital note taking
  • The ability to use a computer where it’s inappropriate to use a laptop (meetings, conferences, events)
  • Handwriting recognition
  • Digital sketching
  • Wow factor (Wow, what’s that?).

The interesting thing is that the Tablet PC kind of slipped in the back door for a number of reasons. We still experience people’s shock and awe on a daily basis when using our Tablet PC’s because they’ve never seen one before.

Because Tablet PC’s have gone largely unnoticed so far in Australia, about 2 years ago I was able to register tabletpc.com.au and put together a quick website to sell Tablet PC’s. This was akin to buying waterfront land in Coffs Harbour 20 years ago.

Well, the heat is really on now for Tablet PC’s. This month HP launched a new range of laptops headlined by the HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PC. Major brands such as Toshiba, Lenovo (formerly IBM), Asus, LG, Motion Computing, Panasonic and Fujitsu all have Tablet PC’s on the market in Australia.

With the launch of Next G and the phase out of Telstra’s old CDMA countrywide network, mobile broadband is really taking off (I’m actually using a Telstra Next G mobile broadband card to post this blog from Noosa!).  Mobile broadband makes a lot of sense with a Tablet PC.

Tablet PC’s will be the biggest change to mobile working since the mobile phone. There couldn’t be a better time to be involved with marketing Tablet PC’s. The question is, what will be the next big thing in the Internet land rush for me? It might be more obvious than you think…

Bamboo Floors - A sustainable alternative to Hard Wood

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Did you know that Bamboo can grow up to 4 ft in one day?

I didn’t until I met Ken and Lyn Acheson at Crikey Bamboo. They’ve been in the flooring business for over 30 years and they introduced us to the concept of Bamboo floors as an alternative to hardwood flooring.

What we didn’t know about Bamboo flooring was that:

  • It’s actually 8 times harder than “hardwood” flooring
  • It has an incredibly fast growing cycle and can be harvested in 4-6 years
  • It’s a very sustainable product because it requires fewer resources than hardwood flooring to produce.

If you’re in the market for a hardwood floor, then head over to see Ken and Lyn at Crikey Bamboo and check out the Bamboo flooring alternative first. You’ll be surprised at the quality of the finish and you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that you’ve done your bit for a sustainable future.

Mag Wheels - New and Used in Victoria

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Canterbury Tyres are specialists in new and used mag wheels. At their 3 retail sites in the Melbourne suburbs they house the largest collection of second hand and rare wheels in Australia.

If you’re looking for a rare wheel, a part set or wheels for a classic car, then the chances are that Canterbury Tyres have them in stock. They also carry a full range of new mag wheels and tyres.

Because Canterbury Tyres carry such a unique range of products they will do lots of business on the Internet.

Whenever we can we like to shop with our clients, and I’m happy to say that my experience with Canterbury Tyres at the Bayswater store was exceptional. They fitted my car with a complete new set of tyres, then balanced and aligned the wheels in just under two hours. I drove the car to Sydney on the same day, and I have to say that I’ve never had wheels balanced so well. The ride was perfect and the service was great.

Selling is not telling - Ask questions

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Wayne Berry of Top Gun Business Academy taught me that “selling is not telling.” Over the past 5 years I’ve learnt an enormous amount from Wayne about selling.  One of the fundamental keys to professional sales is to be more interested in your customers than yourself. Seems basic right?

It still shocks me how many sales people are unprofessional. You can spot an unprofessional sales person straight away when they:

  1. Immediately start talking at you
  2. Launch straight into the great features of the product that they’re flogging
  3. Start bagging the competition
  4. Offer you a solution without knowing what you want
  5. Start demonstrating their product.

If you are a sales person ask yourself, “Whose voice do I hear the most when I meet a prospect for the first time?”  If it’s your own, then it’s time to brush up on your skills.

Now it may be that you truly have something exciting to say to them, but the problem is that:

Your prospects don’t care!

That is, they don’t care until they know that you are interested in them and that you understand their specific circumstances.

How can you establish interest in your prospects and develop understanding? That’s the easy part:

  1. Ask questions to develop rapport, to uncover needs, wants and emotional drivers.
  2. Have the questions prepared in advance and written down.
  3. Take notes on your prospect’s answers to your questions, taking particular notice of the things that they really get excited about.
  4. Only offer a solution based on what you’ve uncovered through asking questions.

Trying to “pitch” to a prospect is hard work. Asking questions on the other hand is easy because you don’t have to feel pressure to perform. You can just sit back and listen while your prospects happily talk about themselves.

The interesting thing that not many people know is that this principle fits perfectly with web marketing. Take a look at your lead generation website. Is it telling or selling?

Lead generation - Can you ever have enough leads?

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

If you’re not generating leads from your marketing well, then this question is a no brainer. If your marketing is working well, you may be comfortable that you’re generating enough leads.

However, if you are getting lots of leads but you’re experiencing problems with customers and profits, then you might want to think about this. There is an argument that you can never have enough leads. I’ve considered the question in this page.

Web Marketing = Branding, Design, Web Development, Search Engine Optimisation, Lead Generation?

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

So what does it take to create an effective web marketing website? Our experience shows that it takes a range of expertise from fields such as:

I always wonder why “web designer” became the term that many people associate with creating a website. To create an effective web marketing campaign takes so much more than a web designer.

Perhaps the reason that “web designer” became pervasive is that most business owners are unsure how to measure the outcomes of a web marketing project. Designers and Marketing Agencies have sold them on the idea that marketing outcomes are intangible things like image and brand recognition. For most small to medium businesses in Australia, that is simply not good enough.

Promoting your business by web marketing is a tangible, measurable process. It can be measured by:

If a web designer can’t instantly show you examples of how they deliver on these KPI’s, then it’s time to look for a web marketing company. A web marketing company can help you to:

  1. Generate leads for your business
  2. Support you to make sales

If you are not generating leads or making sales through your website, then it’s time to act.

Case Study: Mobile Mechanic - Monster Conversion Rates!

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Ace Mobile Mechanics provide mobile car service, mobile auto electrician service and breakdown assistance to Melbourne and surrounding suburbs.

Like many businesses, Ace mobile had a website but were not using it as a lead generation tool. In fact, their website didn’t even have their phone number listed (a 13 number - 13 20 42).

Challenge:

To turn Ace Mobile’s website into a lead generation tool.

Response:

New website:

We designed the new Ace Mobile website to be simple and easy to read so as not to get in the way of the potential customer. A thorough understanding of the target market enabled us to write copy that honed in on the customers needs. A clear call to action was incorporated into the copy and contact forms were designed to ensure a high conversion rate.

Build website traffic:

Attaining high Google rankings enabled us to quickly generate traffic to the website. The search terms that Ace Mobile can be found on include:

In addition to these highly searched on terms, the Ace Mobile website is drawing website visits from several hundred other search terms. Ace Mobile also has significant placements in Yellow Pages® and Yellow Pages® online which generate further traffic to the website.

The results - Extreme conversion rates:

Here’s where it gets interesting. Our statistics show that for every 100 people that come to the Ace Mobile website, 10 people will fill in a contact form and leave their details behind. A further 10 people will pick up the phone and call.

That is a staggering 20% visits to leads conversion rate!

A further 50% of those people actually book a service.

Most websites that we see get around a 0.1% visits to leads conversion rate.

These kind of conversion rates are practically unprecedented in any form of marketing. Bear in mind that around 50% of visits to the website come from Victoria where Ace Mobile operates. The other 50% of website visitors are not even in the market.

Copywriting - A thousand words is worth a picture

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

What’s more important, the copywriting or the design of your website?

Don’t get me wrong, web design is very important. A bad web design turns people off and reflects poorly on your brand. However, the more important yet often forgotten part of any web marketing project is the copywriting of your website. Good copywriting includes:

  • Well constructed headlines
  • Use of search engine keywords
  • Understanding the wants, needs and pains of your target audience
  • Having a clear call to action.

Copywriting is the key to getting your message through to your customers. Read more >>
